Mariners make move on 1B who hit 35 HRs in a season
The Seattle Mariners have strengthened their roster by signing Rowdy Tellez, a first baseman with a powerful bat, to a minor league deal, which includes an invite to MLB spring training. Tellez, 29, is eager to bounce back after a tough 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although his year was marked by inconsistency—starting poorly with a .177 batting average—he regained his form midseason, posting impressive numbers with a .310 average and .533 slugging percentage from June to August. Unfortunately, his performance dipped again in September, leading to his release just before triggering a $200,000 contract bonus.

Despite the ups and downs, Tellez’s power remains undeniable, hitting 13 home runs and 56 RBIs in 2024. He has totaled 61 home runs over the past three years, including a career-high 35 homers with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2022. This makes him a potential asset for the Mariners, adding significant depth at first base and designated hitter as the team prepares for the 2025 season.
Seattle has been seeking to enhance its first base depth, particularly in a platoon role alongside Luke Raley. The Mariners had also signed veteran Donovan Solano, but visa issues have delayed his arrival to spring training, opening the door for Tellez to compete for a spot. Tellez could serve as a temporary fill-in for Solano or even vie for the designated hitter position, though his path to an Opening Day roster spot is still uncertain. If not on the big league squad, he could begin the season in Triple-A Tacoma, serving as a depth option for the Mariners.
While Tellez is limited to first base and DH duties, his left-handed power bat gives him a unique appeal. Seattle struggled with offensive consistency in 2024, and if Tellez can rediscover his 2022 form, he could be a valuable contributor in the lineup. His addition increases the Mariners’ depth, offering more competition and flexibility as they finalize their roster for the upcoming season.
